Solar plant
The Hopitaly Zoara in Fotadrevo uses the public electricity network, which is supplied by two large diesel generators on the nearby town square. Yet the power supply is unstable: even on a good day there is only power for around 3 hours in the evening. The three diesel generators on the hospital site which ensure a reliable supply for the operating room and for emergency refrigeration of drugs, vaccines and laboratory tests have high maintenance and running costs (the price of diesel in Madagascar is similar to the price in Europe) and are environmentally harmful.
It was therefore a great relief in many ways when in January 2013, thanks to the support of the foundation 'Nord-Süd-Brücken', a small solar power plant could be installed. With this new power source, there is power available round the clock to run a solar fridge for drugs and vaccines as well as several night lights on the wards. For those on night-time shifts on the hospital grounds, in the wards or in the operating theatre, these outdoor and ceiling lights make work much safer.
