CENTRES DE SANTÉ DE BASE

Centres de Santé de Base are basic healthcare facilities in the Madagascan countryside. Usually simple stone structures containing an emergency room and an examination room and staffed by a nurse and a midwife, they are the first port of call for the sick. Only rarely is a doctor available.

FIRST PORT OF CALL FOR SMALL MEDICAL CONCERNS

In rural Madagascar, local health care centres (Centres de Santé de Base), staffed by two to three employees - usually a midwife, a nurse and occasionally a doctor - are provided by the Madagascan government. Whereas some cases can be treated on location, more difficult ones are referred to hospitals. Difficult working conditions pose significant challenges. In remote areas, maintaining adequate stocks of medical supplies is a major problem. Vacancies often remain vacant and buildings deteriorate.

Doctors for Madagascar collaborates with nearly 40 CSBs within a 50 km radius of the hospitals in Fotadrevo, Ejeda and Manambaro. In the capital region, there is collaboration with about 20 partner centers. We help out with equipment and smaller construction projects. The staff in these centres are open-minded and happy to collaborate: opportunities for training and sharing of knowledge are always well-received and welcome.
